Tyres are measured by taking three readings across the width of the tyre starting with the outside tread depth measurement. There can be a wide variation in the readings signifying different things. For example, a reading of 7,5,3 may indicate the need for a four wheel alignment check.
MAXIMUM TYRE TREAD = 8mm
MINIMUM LEGAL LIMIT = 1.6mm* (*Centre 75% of the breadth and around entire circumference)
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM TREAD = 3mm
The law allows you to be fined up to £1000 and 3 penalty points applied on your licence for each illegal tyre.
You should check the pressure in your tyres at least once a week, and before every long journey. If the pressure seems low, check it immediately with a tyre gauge.
You can use an electric tyre pump, which are at most petrol stations and garages. The recommended pressure is usually given on the tyre information label on the rear doorjamb on the driver's side, or on a chart in a petrol station. Always check your vehicle manual or tyre manufacturer if you’re unsure.

• When replacing a tyre, never fit a different type of tyre to your vehicle unless it’s a temporary run flat tyre (see above).
• Different types should not be fitted to opposite wheels of the vehicle on the same axis.
• It’s best to replace all four tyres at the same time. If this isn’t possible or necessary, replace the two front tyres or the two rear tyres as a pair, since replacing just one can affect your car’s handling.
Incorrect balancing not only causes vibration in the steering wheel but can also cost you money! Incorrect balancing causes premature wear of tyres and rapid wear of the suspension. If you find that your steering ‘wobbles’ at a certain speed, this may be a sign that your wheels are not balanced properly. If left, this can not only be uncomfortable to drive, but may affect the performance of your vehicle
When you purchase new tyres from Taj Tyres we will always balance your wheels. This is because new tyres will often have inconsistencies in the rubber compound – wheel balancing will take account of this and encourages even wear on your new tyres.
You should also have your wheels checked or balanced after an impact such as a pavement, pothole or stone, when a tyre looks abnormal or every 10,000 miles.
Taj Tyres uses the latest balancing equipment allowing wheels to be balanced with great accuracy, to the nearest gram.
Like the tyre itself, you can expect rubber valves to become damaged through everyday use. That’s why, we recommend your valves are replaced each time the tyre is removed from the rim. The cost of a valve is small compared to that of a tyre and incomparable to the cost of your safety. The valve is a complex component that contributes to maintaining correct tyre pressure.
Before we commit to any repair we will closely inspect the tyre. We make sure there is no secondary damage, worn tread or any other deterioration in the tyre.
A tyre repair is a highly technical process that is covered by the British Standard that has strict guidelines on how and when a tyre can be repaired. Every tyre we repair will be to these standards and our qualified fitters can offer more information about this process if required.
If there is any doubt whether a tyre should or should not be repaired, we will not repair it and advise you of the safety concerns and reasoning behind this.
Further driving on a damaged tyre after a puncture will almost certainly deem it not repairable
1. Always carry a spare tyre.
2. Don’t change your tyre size or type without seeking advice from your car or tyre manufacturers.
3. Check your tyre pressure. Refer to your vehicle manual or contact your tyre manufacturer if you’re unsure of your correct pressure level.
4. Motorists can be fined and receive points on their licence for each unsafe tyre on their vehicle.
5. Pressure washers can damage the tyre sidewalls – keep the washer at least 35cm away from the tyre when cleaning it.
6. Remove any stones and other foreign objects from within your tyre tread.
7. Clean dirt from around the valve in your tyre and ensure these have dust caps attached.
8. Avoid driving over potholes, kerbs and speed bumps – these can weaken the tyre’s structure over time.

• Around 13% of UK cars have at least one defective tyre, and a further 13% have a tyre below 2mm.

The law states that in order to be legal a tyre must comply with a number of requirements.
These requirements range from what the manufacturer must be responsible for - relevant sidewall markings etc - and what the motorist should be responsible for - correct fitment and condition of tyre, tread depths etc.
It is recommended that tyres are checked on a weekly basis for tread depth, tread condition, inflation pressure, tread/sidewall damage, any signs of irregular wear. If in doubt seek the advice of a trained tyre expert who will be able to determine the suitability of the tyre for further use.
The penalties for having illegal tyres are currently up to a £2500 fine and 3 penalty points PER TYRE & DISCRETIONARY DISQUALIFICATION!
The following gives an overview of the relevant points.
You must NOT have radial tyres on the front wheels and cross ply tyres on the rear wheels, it is also illegal to have a cross ply tyre on one side with a radial on the other.
All tyres must have a service description (i.e. load and speed index)
If the vehicle was to operate outside the service description indicated on the sidewall e.g. at a higher speed or overloaded then the tyres would be deemed to be unsuitable for the use, and a prosecution would follow.
Regulation 27 states "the tyre is not so inflated as to make it fit for the use to which the motor vehicle or trailer is put", however this statement is fairly ambiguous. As there is no indication of at what point an under or over inflated tyre becomes unfit for the use it is being put to.
A cut in excess of 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre , whichever is the greater, measured in any direction on the outside of the tyre and deep enough to reach the ply or cord would deem the tyre illegal.
If there is any cut in the tyre no matter how small which exposes the cords, then the tyre is illegal.
Regulation 27 states - " the tyre must not have any lump, bulge or tear caused by separation or partial failure of its structure ".It is good practice wherever possible when assessing damage that the tyre is removed from the rim and inspected both internally and externally.
The legal minimum tread depth for cars and light trailers (including caravans) up to 3500 kgs gross vehicle weight and/or 8 seated passenger vehicles including driver is:
A minimum of 1.6mm in a continuous band throughout the central three-quarters of the tread width, throughout the whole of the circumference (see illustration below).

Alignment is important for road holding and problems can cause rapid and abnormal tyre wear and wear on steering components. Events such as hitting a kerb or driving through a pothole can result in misalignment. We recommend you have your alignment checked at least once a year.
As well as this you should have it checked if:
• You notice abnormal tyre wear.
• Your vehicle has recently experienced a violent shock, for example hit a pot hole or kerb.
• The road holding of the vehicle is diminishing
